To continue where the first blog post ended, let’s start with our fifth day in Athens. Once again, we spent a slow morning indoors because what awaited us was a bit of hiking. Our friend drove us to Filothei Hill (Hill of the Muses) and we climbed up all the way to the top. The view from up there was an unobscured one, with Athens visible from all sides. After taking some goofy photos of the three of us, we headed down the path when the sky darkened. By the time we got to the café at the foot of the hill, it started pouring down. After enjoying another delicious iced chocolate, we headed out and ran towards the car. What followed next was a double date at a delicious pasta restaurant.

The following morning, we were ambitious enough to put the alarm for 6 AM but naturally, we slept an additional hour. Nonetheless, by the time we got to Plaka and the Ancient Agora, we found ourselves alone there. I will never understand why most tourists go out after 10 AM, especially in Athens because it’s already too hot by then. I couldn’t recommend it more, exploring Athens as soon as possible in the morning! The Ancient Agora was a fascinating site to visit, especially for the extremely well-preserved Hephaisteion.

Also, while trying to find a specific bookstore, we stumbled upon one whose interior swept me off my feet. I found it to be so charming that I wished this was my workplace! Filled with books in various languages from top to bottom, I wanted to take all of them home with me. By the time we got out of the bookstore, it was time for lunch so we stopped by the bakery. After some relaxing time at home, that evening we headed out to En Aithria with our friends. I feel like a broken record by now but I need to say again how uncomparably appetizing Greek food is! After that outing, we pretty much just collapsed in bed from exhaustion. We knew a hard day awaited us tomorrow – visiting the National Archaeological Museum.

I don’t know why but a day spent in museums always leaves me more tired than one spent walking around the city. It must be the slow strolling around that ultimately tires me out. Anyhow, the National Archaeological Museum was ridiculously big, as we expected. It truly is a museum that deserves another visit! It was awe-inspiring to see all those works of art right in front of me! That evening included lots of singing and cooking and enjoying delicious pasta for dinner!

On our penultimate day, we actually ticked off everything left on our list. This time we got up at 6 AM and went straight to Hadrian’s Library. The remaining front wall of the structure was so imposing when compared to us! Once again, we enjoyed the whole site to ourselves before taking a walk through the remaining streets of Plaka. Now it was Grégory’s turn to be the guide and he took me up to the Philopappos monument. This hill provides you with a stunning view of the Acropolis. And because it’s right across from it, you can actually hear all the noise from the Acropolis carry through to Philoppapos Hill! Because of hiking up the hill, we were in need of a refreshment break so I got to enjoy another iced chocolate. As you might have noticed, I developed an obsession with iced chocolates while in Athens!

Our first time in Athens: Part 2We spent our last evening in Athens in much the same fashion as the first one. Overlooking the city lights, enjoying my very last iced chocolate, and having a great time with our friend who was the kindest host ever! Our very last morning in Greece was one spent at the airport. We said goodbye to our dear friend and headed inside to queue up. While it was comforting to know we were going back home, I was already nostalgic over the lovely memories we made in Athens. It truly was the best holiday together so far!
