Arsenic and Old Lace

Arsenic and Old Lace (1944)

I have always had a lot of love for old movies and in these cold months, I love curling up and rewatching a few of my favorites. Or quite a lot of my favorites, to be honest. But the ultimate autumn-feeling movie has got to be Arsenic and Old Lace. Set on Halloween, it is a black comedy revolving around a newly married man who finds out something rather “unusual” about his two aunts. What follows is unexpected guests, confusion and lots of laughter. I won’t say much more because I’m dreadful at describing movie plots. I will just add that even my boyfriend who is fairly new to classics absolutely loved this one!

Most of the time, it’s a choice between Tom Waits and Billie Holiday. Completely different style, not to mention the voice but they always get me in a melancholy but happy autumn mood. That’s an odd way to describe it but I’ve never known how to describe the feeling I get as I walk down rainy streets listening to either of these two. I just get unnaturally happy while listening to melancholic songs during the cold months.

Pumpkin Soup and Homemade Bread

Pumpkin soup and homemade bread

Is there anything better than warm homemade bread combined with homemade pumpkin soup? Especially when the weather outside is windy and cold, which for us still means going out because that’s what you get when you have labradors. Also, our latest buy is a bread machine. I now know that a bread machine is the best “air freshener” out there. Nothing beats the smell of freshly baked bread!

Hiking in Hautes Fagnes, Belgium
Ever since our chocolate lab came into our lives, we’ve found ourselves in the woods during cold months far more often than ever before. And I love every second of it, despite the fact that by the time our hike ends I can’t feel my fingers or toes anymore. There’s just something about the cold fresh air you encounter in the woods during autumn. I find myself walking around with a smile on my face, for no other reason than it being autumn.

Woods Domaine de Berinzenne, Belgium
The palette of the woods says it all. Where else would you rather go than among those lovely orange tones? I know my first choice is always the forest. Even back when I was living in cities I was always trying to find trees. My cravings are now satisfied since I find myself living 5 minutes away from a forest that climbs up the hill.

Sweaters over Dresses

Me in the forest
Anyone who knows me is aware of the fact that I constantly wear dresses but my favorite time to wear them is during autumn, with sweaters on top. By the time August rolls in, I actually get anxious for colder weather and this kind of outfit. Always too anxious for seasons to change, thinking it takes them too long. And then by the time they’re over, I’m always left thinking the season felt too short. Nonetheless, that never stops me from fully enjoying all the seasons!
