Finally, an opportunity to introduce one of my favorite autumnal places. The Abbey of Val-Dieu is located near Aubel, a short drive away from our home. This was our third visit to the abbey, the first being in 2016. That year we just stopped by after exploring nearby villages with our dog. Due to the fact that dogs aren’t allowed in the abbey garden, we only checked out the inner courtyard but I was already in love. Specifically, in love with the dark green door covered in cobwebs and enveloped in green and red ivy.

The following year, once again, we impulsively decided to stop by and finally see the garden. We spent that sunny morning apple picking and wished to enjoy the sun a bit longer. Miles didn’t accompany us this time so we got a glimpse of the garden and it was beautiful. Autumn was slowly rolling in but the sun was still shining brightly. The wind was scattering the leaves onto the path, which was a beautiful sight. The garden felt like the most peaceful place around.

A couple of weeks ago, we finally came back to the abbey in order to take some photos. We arrived before sundown and walked around with our digital and analog camera. It was nice to revisit it during autumn but I once again felt like we were too early. But it was a Friday and knowing how busy it gets on the weekends, I was impatient to visit the abbey for an autumn photo shoot.

I was wearing my new old dress from the 1930s and naturally, I spent most of the time in front of the green door. The green and red ivy was still present, encircling the door in a different shape this year. The trees were only beginning to turn yellow but we found the park almost empty. Nonetheless, I think I’m going to wait a little longer next time and enjoy it in the early autumnal morning. Until then, I hope you like this set of photos from the Val-Dieu abbey!
